VKO general questions
What is VKO ?
VKO is the abbreviation for Virtual Keizerwaard Orgel.
Many virtual organs have an abbreviation such as VPTO (Virtual Pipe Theater Organ)
To immortalize the real Keizerwaard organ, also known as the famous "Magic Organ", the idea has been started to make this also virtual.
Why a Virtual Keizerwaard Orgel
The real organ was developed entirely by Jaap Keizerwaard in the 1960s.
Really everything, but everything is made by Jaap himself.
Now that the organ has found a beautiful place in the Museum Sound and Vision in Hilversum, there was a need to immortalize the organ for everyone.
Many enthusiastic organ enthusiasts would also like to play at home on the still majestic and famous "Magic Organ".
That is why, especially out of honor for Jaap and his family, we have made a virtual version so that the organ can be enjoyed for a long time to come.
What is Hauptwerk
Hauptwerk is the program needed to run many virtual organs.
It is a paid program made by "Milan Digital Audio"
When this program is running, various Sample Sets can be installed where you can play very realistic Pipe Organs (including church organs) but also impressive Theater Organs live by yourself, friends or family members.
Now the Keizerwaard organ, which is very well known in the Netherlands, is also available.
Many famous artists have played this organ.
Can I startup the Virtual Keizerwaard Organ directly? ?
Directly ? Well, indirectly.
The Virtual Keizerwaard organ is a so-called Sampleset which needs the Hauptwerk program as host.
So it is not stand alone.
Hauptwerk is a kind of mother program with which you can operate various pipe organs, theater organs or the Virtual Keizerwaard Organ.
The Virtual Keizerwaard Orgel is programmed in the Hauptwerk program language.
Why is every tone recorded ?
You will expect an organ to often have a few samples and raise and lower them in frequency.
This also occurs with most electronic organs.
However, Jaap Keizerwaard's organ was designed with the characteristics of a real musical instrument.
Often when an instrument sounds higher, the formant of the instrument also changes slightly.
Jaap Keizerwaard listened carefully to that.
To keep this as true to life as possible, it was decided to sample all notes.
As the organ sounds in real life, it should also sound as a virtual organ.
Is there another way I can remotely control the registers? ?
Certainly, the three most usuable ways are:
1. Using Hardware pushbuttons that can control functions with a MIDI command
2. Touch OSC, a program that allows you to see and operate the register buttons on a tablet (iPad or Android).
A free Touch OSC layout has been made that you can use, especially for the Keizerwaard Orgel
(can be downloaded from the site)
3. With a Launchpad. A panel with 80 push buttons, each of which can be operated.
All push buttons can also be illuminated in different colours
Is a voice a little out of tune ?
Do you think that a certain register is slightly out of tune?
That is possible. The samples are recorded directly from the real organ.
Many samples have been adjusted, but it may happen that you want to tune it a little higher or lower.
That is possible in Hauptwerk. (Assuming we work with Hauptwerk 7)
- As an example: Flute 8, the C key of manual 1 is a bit too high.
Choose the appropriate register
Go to the "Organ Settings" tab, then to "Rank voicing and surroud...." (or CTRL + H)
1. Select the appropriate register, in this case Manual 1, Flute 8.
2. In the Adjustments menu, choose: "All perspectives: overall: tuning (cenkts)"
3. Press the relevant key "C" on your organ keyboard.
4. Use the slider to adjust the tone of the "C".

It is best to tune with another register that is pure or to play an octave higher with the same register (so two notes of C in this case)
